25) Gibraltar

Gibraltar 36° 09N 5°21’W

After tying to the dock we decided to head into town.  John had been here before and wanted to show us downtown and get a bite to eat at one of his favorite spots.  Since we were on foot we were able to see the street life up close.  We went to the Safeway, yes Safeway while passing McDonalds, yes McDonalds so John could get some British pounds from the ATM.

We then headed for Al Medina and had a falafel style pocket sandwich.  It was fantastic! It was just the right amount of hot spicy sauce on a pile of meat in a large pita pocket.  After that we were ready to go into downtown.  Along the way we passed several monuments, plaques and signs that indicated some of the events that had occurred here in the past.  There is so much history in this geographic area dating back to the Pillars of Hercules, the two points of land that define the Straights of Gibraltar.  The streets and buildings here are very similar to everything we have seen in our Mediterranean crossing.  The biggest difference is that everything is in English!  Finally, I can read and understand most of what is around me.  American, Outta my way!  Coming thru!

Again, John strikes up a conversation with this guy about what’s good behind the glass.  This guy had some very insightful opinions as to the best Irish Whiskey’s and proceeded to tell us that it was his goal to drink a bottle from every of those distillers.  Something over a hundred and twenty or so and he had already made a dent in that goal.

The oldest pub in Gibraltar.
