40) Lanzarote, Islas Canarias

Marina Rubicon, Playa Blanca, Lanzarote, Islas Canarias 28° 51’ 5” N 13° 49’ 0” W

Today was our chance to go have a look at some of the island.  We had several items on the list that dictated much of where we went and when such as: getting the propane bottles filled, grocery shopping and parts.  Immediately after leaving the marina somehow John took the “shortcut” to the highway that was not paved and very rustic.  After we made it to the end of a short dead-end road where the monument entrance was located we turned around and in a speedy way went looking for a way to the highway that we could just see over the fields.  During this part of the bumpy ride John gave us his advice of don’t ever buy a rental car.  Duly noted.

The local structures are usually interesting and the extensive use of the indigenous materials is obvious.  Lava rocks and boulders are used for all kinds of rock walls and crushed lava is used as a ground cover.  This place has a water shortage and agriculture is sparse.  We could not figure out why everywhere you look fields have been graded, covered with crushed rock and then plowed with furrows similar to farming yet nothing is growing.

We ventured into the town Arrecife with only a short period of time to see things today and thought this would be the best place to go.

The stroll along the waterfront park/flea market was rather interesting.

Went grocery shopping at the local mall and came upon a Christmas display with, uhm a blue Santa.  The nativity scene under construction was very well crafted.  Getting propane turned out to be the hardest thing we did all day.  But we did manage to find the place and thought it was hilarious that all we wanted was a few gallons and, well the picture says it all.
