35) Luganville, Espirito Santo, Vanuatu pt 3

September 2008: South Pacific
Luganville, Espirito Santo, Vanuatu pt 3 (S 15.30.905 E 167.11.027)

Aore Island, Vanuatu (S 15.32.252 E167.10.810)

The majority of our stay here has been on a mooring ball at the Aore Resort on Aore Island.  The water is calm and well protected from the wind waves and we still get the refreshing breeze.  We purchase ferry tickets in the bar for 250 Vetu ($2.50 USD) for a small boat with a regular schedule and a 10 minute ride to Luganville.  This resort has 18 bungalows on the shoreline and a French styled restaurant that is outstanding.  This appears to be the premier resort in this part of Vanuatu.  We rarely see airplanes flying around here and the planes we have seen were small twin prop’s.

We took a walk thru town and came upon the produce market.  The vendors show up late Sunday afternoon with fresh produce and stay for a couple days.  Many of them sleep under their tables.  The quality that we saw was fairly tired and may just have been at the end of their stay.  Some of the stuff was excellent but we also did not see most of the stuff we have usually seen.  Overall this was a much smaller and more primitive produce market and no fish market anywhere.  That’s Kava root below to the left.  One of the vendors that we bought from had a necklace cell phone holder out of braided leaves.  Some of them appear poor yet the cell phone companies have been able to get phones in their hands.  It is so successful here that they give mini solar chargers with the purchase of the phone.  Then you just ‘top up’ your minute’s card.

We were walking along minding our own business and Dave gets involved with talking to this guy.  Well, he doesn’t drink Kava anymore since he found Jesus.  And, here I am looking for a Kava bar.  We also wanted to get some lunch and for some reason the chicken thing above just didn’t look right.
