September 2008: South Pacific
Bedo Point, Pentecost Island, Vanuatu (S 15.47.338 E 168.09.708)
We stopped at Pentecost Island because if we continued on to Luganville we would have arrived after dark and that is not an option we want to take. All throughout the south Pacific fires burn. The startling thing about this anchorage and the picture above is the height of the fires up the hill in the dense jungle. Add the tons of rain that we saw here and that they get and it’s a wonder that anything burns at all. I counted 9 fires from our vantage point.
We tried to stop at a couple other places on this coast before using this one. The other spots even though they were ‘in the book’ were pretty exposed to the prevailing winds and swells. As we motored in very slowly watching the depth get shallow we were able to see the upper spill portion of a waterfall. Given the amount of rain this place appears to get and the density of the jungle it is no wonder there is a waterfall.
This particular stop was also a rest from the passage. It is really nice to be able to break up passages. Some passages are smooth and some are lumpy.
