76) Grenada

St. George’s Harbour, Grenada

Just when we were ready to weigh anchor it started to rain.  We sat in the cockpit and waited.  There was a rainbow at the mouth of the harbor and it was very picturesque and a nice send off.  We only sailed for a few hours before the sails came down and the motor was started.  The direction we wanted to go was dead down wind and this boat does not have a spinnaker that allows us to do that.  We have to be off the wind at least 30°.  At that angle we had a bad angle to the swells and it was one helluva rocking and rolling ride.  It was very uncomfortable.  The lesser of evils was to motor in order to get there ‘on time’.

We motored for 2 full days to Bonaire.  It is a real bummer when you sit in the cockpit and smell diesel fumes.  It was even worse when I was lying in bed and it is warm so the hatch is open and the fumes come in.  I would much rather tack back and forth like a sailboat does and take more time to get there than smell diesel fumes.  At one point I went all the way to the bow to get away from the fumes.  Even there it stunk.  The exhaust comes out the side of the boat amidships and even though we are going forward at 6 knots a 15 knot wind blows it forward and it comes inside and onboard.

Saw a few dolphins
